Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenski announced that his country is ready to open six chapters in its accession negotiations with the European Union. In an evening address, Zelenski said that the upcoming week would be diplomatically intense.
Zelenski noted that the EU’s confirmation of readiness to open the first negotiation chapter has given new momentum to the process. He emphasized that Ukraine has done everything necessary for this progress and thanked everyone supporting and working for his country.
The Ukrainian leader also expressed expectations for more results in EU integration during the summer months. He assured that there would be no delays on Ukraine’s side and stressed the critical importance of partner countries fully understanding the significance of this process.
Schedule for Opening the First Chapter Clarified
Last week, the European Council officially initiated the process to open Chapter 1, "Foundations," in the membership negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova. This step is seen as a significant milestone in both the technical and political phases of the accession process.
The EU Council’s Cyprus presidency is preparing to hold intergovernmental conferences with Ukraine and Moldova on Monday, June 15, to open the "Foundations" chapter. Zelenski’s statement reflects Kyiv’s expectations for the negotiation process ahead of this schedule.
The Ukrainian administration views the opening of the first chapter as the start of broader progress. Zelenski’s message highlighted the expectation that the six chapters will be addressed together and that the integration process will accelerate throughout the summer.
