The United States has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to take part in the G20 leaders' summit, which will be held in Miami in December, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said.
Rubio confirmed the invitation while speaking with journalists in New York after meeting Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
The US secretary of state said that resolving international problems requires maintaining contacts, including with states and leaders with whom Washington has serious disagreements.

Rubio noted that Putin's participation in the G20 summit would give the Russian president an opportunity to hold talks not only with US President Donald Trump but also with other world leaders.
The secretary of state added that Washington hopes Putin will accept the invitation.

Putin-Trump meeting could take place on the sidelines of the G20
Rubio said a separate meeting between Putin and Trump is not officially scheduled at present.
At the same time, he stressed that the United States remains open to contacts with the Russian leadership and that Putin's participation in the summit could create an opportunity for talks between the two presidents.

According to Rubio, a summit should ideally lead to a concrete result, so holding one would require substantial preparatory work.
The statement came after Rubio and Lavrov held talks in New York, where they discussed the war between Russia and Ukraine as well as relations between Moscow and Washington.
Russia remains a member of the G20. At the time of Rubio's statement, the Kremlin had not publicly confirmed whether Putin would accept Washington's invitation.
