During the NATO summit in Ankara, U.S. President Donald Trump made a statement to reporters after his meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Trump put forward a controversial view on the control of Greenland.
Trump, saying "This should be controlled by the US, not Denmark," claimed that this issue damaged his relations with NATO.
Trump said, "This is what damaged my relationship with NATO, because Greenland doesn't help Denmark. Denmark doesn't spend money to really help Greenland, but this is an important place for the US and it's surrounded by Chinese ships and Russian ships, and this will not be allowed."
He also referred to allies' defense spending, saying, "We are spending all this money to help them against Russia."
Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated in June that talks with Denmark and Greenland were continuing on a monthly basis.
