A new announcement indicating that restrictions on international sporting events in Russia have been eased came from the Russian Taekwondo Union. The union announced that the World Taekwondo Federation had authorized the resumption of competitions in Russia.
However, the World Taekwondo Federation has not publicly confirmed the announcement. Its event calendars published for 2026 and 2027 contain no competitions scheduled to take place in Russia.
The World Taekwondo Federation suspended Russian and Belarusian athletes in March 2022 following Russia’s full-scale attack on Ukraine and canceled all events in Russia.
Taekwondo athletes from Russia and Belarus in the youth and senior categories were permitted to return to international competitions in January. The decision came before the International Olympic Committee later lifted the temporary ban it had imposed on the two countries’ national Olympic committees.
A source at the Russian Taekwondo Union said this year’s competition schedule had already been finalized. The source said competitions in Russia should be considered for 2027.
The International Equestrian Federation had also announced that it would again allow international competitions to be held in Russia from October 5. The federation also said it would continue the relief fund it established in 2022 to support the urgent needs of Ukraine’s equestrian community.
Some international federations in aquatic sports, motorsport, modern pentathlon, wrestling and gymnastics had also eased restrictions on Russian and Belarusian athletes.
