The Russian Orthodox Church celebrates the birthday of John the Baptist (Ioann Predtecha) on July 7. This date corresponds to the old calendar day that aligns with June 24 according to the Gregorian calendar.
Calendar Position and Significance
Hieromonk Makariy (Markish) from the Ivanovo-Voznesensk Bishopric explained to RIA Novosti the reason why John's birthday is celebrated exactly six months before Jesus's birth. Markish said, "There are six months between the Savior's birth and John's birth, exactly according to the calendar. While the Savior's birth is celebrated in winter, his birth is celebrated six months earlier, in summer."
Markish noted that this chronological connection is clearly stated in the Gospel of Luke. According to it, when John's mother Elizabeth was in the sixth month of her pregnancy, Mary visited her.
John's Role in the Gospels
Hieromonk Makariy emphasized that John's place in the Gospel narrative is very clear. "In all four Gospels, he is the precursor, the one who comes before the prophet, the one who announces the arrival of Christ in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus came to him at the Jordan River and was baptized," he stated.
John is considered the last prophet of the Old Testament and is known for foretelling the arrival of Jesus Christ and baptizing him in the Jordan River. His birth is celebrated as a feast day, making him one of the few saints whose birth is commemorated.
In Orthodox tradition, only a few saints' birthdays are commemorated as special feast days, such as the birth of Jesus (Christmas), the birth of Mary, and the birth of Saint Nicholas.
