Russia's Federal Medical-Biological Agency (FMBA) has begun the preparation stage for research on volunteers for a domestically developed vaccine against dengue fever. The research process is planned to last about a year and be conducted at research centers in Moscow.
Ellina Ruzanova, Deputy General Director for Development at the St. Petersburg Vaccine and Serum Research Institute, which is part of the FMBA, told RIA Novosti, "The preparation stage for conducting the research is underway. The selection of volunteers over 18 who meet the inclusion criteria is ongoing."
Ruzanova emphasized that the vaccine is being developed on a recombinant platform, considered one of the safest platforms. "Nevertheless, within the framework of clinical trials, we will definitely build an evidence base for safety," she added.
Vaccine efficacy proven in animals
The expert noted that the vaccine's efficacy has been proven in studies on animals, and a comprehensive set of studies on immune response and safety indicators has been completed.
FMBA Head Veronika Skvortsova had previously announced to RIA Novosti that the agency had received permission to conduct clinical trials of the new dengue fever vaccine.
Dengue fever is known as a viral disease most commonly found in countries in Asia, Africa, Oceania, and the Caribbean. The main route of transmission is through the bite of an infected mosquito.
