The Tumannaya River bridge, intended to strengthen land transportation between Russia and North Korea, entered service at a ceremony held on September 7. The opening was conducted via videoconference attended by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and North Korean Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers Pak Tae Song.
The two countries’ heads of government jointly announced the start of vehicle traffic on the bridge, which is named after Yakov Novichenko, a Red Army officer and North Korean Hero of Labor. Mishustin thanked the workers, engineers, builders, designers and other team members involved in the project, saying that their dedicated work and professional approach had contributed to the joint effort, and wished them success.
A new connection for cross-border transportation
The project was launched under an agreement signed at a meeting attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean Chairman of State Affairs Kim Jong Un in 2024. Mishustin and Pak Tae Song began construction work in April 2025.
Although the Friendship Bridge over the Tumannaya River has a railway connection, the existing route does not adequately meet transportation needs. The new connection is intended to enable year-round road transportation.
Bridge and border-crossing capacity
The approximately 5-kilometer crossing route includes an approximately 1-kilometer section that forms the bridge itself. The new route, which has two vehicle lanes, is intended to increase transportation volume and reduce travel costs.
A 10-lane road border crossing was also built at Hasan alongside the bridge. Once the crossing operates at full capacity, more than 300 vehicles and 2,300 people are expected to pass through each day. The capacity is planned to be increased further.
The new land connection is expected to contribute to more regular product deliveries and expand trade and economic cooperation between Russia and North Korea.
