Russian Senator and Chairman of the Federation Council's Information Policy Commission, Aleksey Pushkov, said the European Union sees its support for Ukraine as a fundamental pillar for political integration.
Pushkov argued that this support serves as a common argument and a unifying element within the EU, which, in his words, serves the pursuit of establishing a more centralized European structure.
The senator recalled that the EU attempted a common constitution initiative at the beginning of the 21st century, but this initiative failed in referendums in France, the Netherlands, and Ireland.
According to him, after that, another path was followed, involving the transfer of powers from nation-states to the European Commission. Pushkov pointed to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as the key figure at the start of this process.
Pushkov stated that Ukraine's defeat in the conflict would weaken this approach, but it would not mean the complete disintegration of the European Union.
According to the senator, in such a case, the union could revert to its previous structure where nations have more say, which would be a heavy blow for proponents of a supranational Europe.
