An unauthorized drone detected in Romanian airspace was shot down under the coordination of NATO’s Combined Air Operations Centre at Torrejón de Ardoz Air Base in Spain.
In an August 16 post on X, NATO Allied Air Command (AIRCOM) said that two Spanish F-18s conducting an enhanced air defense mission in Romania were placed on alert in the morning. The jets shot down the drone in Romanian airspace.
Spanish air assets in Romania
AIRCOM said the F-18s were part of a larger unit sent to Romania by the Spanish Air and Space Force. The unit arrived at Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base at the beginning of the month.
About 200 Spanish personnel were deployed at the base, along with seven F-18 fighter jets, three NH-90 helicopters and an A400M tanker aircraft to be used against drones.
Drone’s origin under investigation
Romanian Defense Minister Radu-Dinel Miruță said the vehicle that entered the country’s airspace without authorization was shot down by NATO-linked Spanish F-18s.
Miruță said the drone crashed in a forested area with no settlements and that work was underway to determine which country it belonged to.
NATO’s air defense posture
AIRCOM said NATO’s shift from air patrols to air defense enabled it to respond more flexibly to a broader range of threats. The command said its operations applied a multilayered “360-degree” approach across all operational areas.
In July, three drones that entered Romanian airspace without authorization on three consecutive days were also shot down.
