Sergey Lavrov assessed tensions between Germany and Russia in connection with the drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The Russian foreign minister described Berlin’s accusation against Moscow over the incident as “in general, the beginning of a real war.”
Lavrov also referred to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s statements about the goal of once again making Germany Europe’s leading military power. The Russian minister argued that this policy was being implemented and claimed that, through this approach, Merz had effectively declared war on Russia.
Berlin’s assessment of responsibility
In a statement on September 1, the German government said it had concluded that Russia was responsible for the attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport the previous month.
Following this assessment, Berlin decided on a series of measures, including the closure of a consulate and the Russian cultural center in Berlin.
Moscow’s counteraccusation
Russia rejected Germany’s accusations as baseless. Moscow also accused Berlin of planting evidence to portray Russia as responsible.
