Kosovo Assembly Speaker Glauk Konjufca sent a letter to the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas. Konjufca demanded that the EU react to controversial statements about Kosovo made by Tanja Paunovic, Serbia's Minister responsible for EU membership.
In an interview with Serbian media on July 11, the anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Paunovic said, "If I were (Slobodan) Milosevic, I would have ethnically cleansed Kosovo in 1998." Following the backlash, Paunovic repeated the statement, arguing that it was an "analysis."
In a statement on social media, Konjufca called on the EU to publicly and unequivocally condemn Paunovic's remarks. "Serbian officials must be told that such rhetoric is unacceptable and contrary to European values," Konjufca said, also advising Serbia to take its EU membership process seriously.
Kosovo War and independence process
The 1998-1999 Kosovo War ended with NATO's air campaign against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. More than 10,000 people, mostly Albanians, lost their lives in the war, and over 1 million were displaced.
Kosovo unilaterally declared independence from Serbia on February 17, 2008. Serbia still considers Kosovo part of its territory.
