Japan has taken a significant step away from its post-World War II pacifist policy, largely lifting restrictions on arms exports. With the new regulations adopted in the country, Japanese defense companies have gained the authority to sell lethal weapon systems directly to 17 different countries. Under these changes, it will become possible to provide advanced frigates to the Philippines and submarines to Indonesia. Over the past decade, Japan had introduced some exceptions and allowed limited sales regarding arms exports. However, this new decision will significantly increase the export capacity of the defense industry.
