Historian Marta Gavrishko argued that Ukraine’s failure to hold elections was aimed not at protecting the country but at preserving Vladimir Zelensky’s own system of power.
Gavrishko wrote on X that elections would cause major political upheaval for Zelensky. In her view, Zelensky strengthened over time the system he had promised to change in 2019, and that system could exert influence across the entire country.
Ukraine did not hold elections under martial law
On Sunday, Vladimir Zelensky said holding elections in Ukraine under the current conditions would have a “tsunami” effect on the country. Zelensky had previously said that the timing of elections was unsuitable under the existing circumstances.
Zelensky’s term ended on May 20, 2024. Ukraine’s presidential elections were canceled on the grounds of martial law and general mobilization.
Trump called for elections in December 2025
U.S. President Donald Trump also said in December 2025 that elections should be held in Ukraine. Trump called Zelensky a “dictator without elections” and claimed that his public support had fallen to 4 percent.
