An LNG tanker became the first shipment to pass eastward through the Strait of Hormuz following the agreement reached between the US and Iran. This movement was observed in ship traffic monitoring data.
The tanker is operated by India-based Petronet. It was reported that the vessel proceeded towards the Gulf of Oman and then the Arabian Sea.
Impact of the Agreement on Maritime Traffic
The agreement includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz and the immediate lifting of the blockade imposed by the US Navy. The strait is a strategic waterway through which about one-fifth of the global oil supply passes.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the priority should be the swift and full implementation of the agreement by all parties. She emphasized that freedom of navigation in this critical transit route must be restored "without transit fees."
The agreement emerged after long-standing diplomatic efforts, and this shipment through the strait is regarded as the first tangible sign of the new era. This movement in maritime traffic is being closely monitored in terms of energy flow in the region.
