Construction of Finland's fence along the Russian border has been completed. The Finnish Border Guard announced that the project, stretching 200 kilometers along the eastern border, had come to an end.
The 4.5-meter-high fence cost 356 million euros to build. Finland did not plan to fence its entire approximately 1,300-kilometer border with Russia because of the cost; the project's average cost was calculated at approximately 1.8 million euros per kilometer.
Construction began in 2023
The fence was built from 2023 onward in the sections of the Russian border with the highest volume of crossings. Finnish authorities said the project was intended to prevent illegal migration.
The border between Finland and Russia has also remained closed since November 2023 under a decision by the Finnish authorities. Finnish authorities claimed that Russia had deliberately played a role in directing people seeking asylum toward the border.
Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, rejected allegations that Russia was involved in the migration crisis in the European Union. Zakharova said this approach reflected the West's double standards.
