A resignation occurred within FIFA's top management due to the plan to privatize the World Cup. Senior adviser to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, American Cordeiro, stepped down in opposition to the idea of opening the World Cup to investors.
Sharing his resignation letter sent to Sky News, Cordeiro stated that Infantino's proposal to open the World Cup to investors jeopardized FIFA's future. Cordeiro, who served as Infantino's adviser for five years, stressed that he had no role in preparing this proposal.
Cordeiro said, "This proposal has become an issue that will determine FIFA's future. After carefully considering the matter, I have decided that I can no longer continue as senior adviser to the FIFA President, and I am therefore resigning with immediate effect."

Noting that FIFA’s primary mission is not to make a profit but to protect football, Cordeiro reminded that the organization has billions of dollars in reserves and no debt. Recalling that the FIFA President said revenue of $15 billion was generated in the 2022-2026 period, Cordeiro said, "If member associations believe additional investment is needed for the development of football, FIFA already has the financial strength to meet that with its existing resources. Under these conditions, selling a permanent stake in football's most valuable asset for $4.2 billion makes no sense."
