The 70th Eurovision Song Contest held in Vienna in 2026 became one of the most political and controversial contests in its history due to the boycott by five countries over Israel's participation. The boycotting countries included the Netherlands, Slovenia, Spain, Ireland, and Iceland. This situation had negative effects on the contest's image and financial structure.
The contest took place with the participation of a total of 35 countries. The organization was conducted by the European Broadcasting Union and Austria's broadcaster ORF. The official opening ceremony was held at the Vienna City Hall with approximately 15,000 attendees. Among the favorites of the contest were Finland's Linda Lampenius and Pete Parkkonen with their live violin solo "Liekinheitin," Greek artist Akylas with his socially critical song "Ferto," as well as representatives from Denmark and Australia.
During the contest, various scandals such as song lyrics, the use of artificial intelligence, and political protests came to the fore. The Romanian representative's lyrics were criticized for sexual connotations, while the Azerbaijani representative denied allegations of using artificial intelligence. Anti-Israel protests forced the contest management to make an official statement, and Eurovision director Martin Green reminded that the contest is a non-political platform.
Ukrainian representative Viktoria Kornikova is expected to receive support from the diaspora. Kornikova competes as the lead singer of the Berlin-based group LELÉKA, and it is anticipated that she will rise in the rankings with votes from the Ukrainian diaspora scattered across Europe due to the war. Germany's representative Sarah Engels attracts attention with her stage performance and song "Fire," but also faces criticism.
It is not yet clear which country will finish first at the end of the contest. However, Israel's participation and the related boycotts and scandals marked Eurovision 2026 as one of the most challenging and controversial contests in its history. Official results and detailed evaluations will be announced after the contest.
