The U.S.-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) has estimated that military losses in the Russia-Ukraine war have exceeded 2 million.
According to the report, since February 2022, between 400,000 and 450,000 Russian soldiers have lost their lives. Total Russian losses (dead, wounded, and missing) are calculated at 1.4 million.
On the Ukrainian side, the report states that between 125,000 and 150,000 soldiers have died, and between 525,000 and 625,000 have been wounded.
CSIS pointed out that the number of Russian deaths in Ukraine is four times the total American deaths in all wars the U.S. has participated in since World War II. Similarly, this figure is more than nine times the total number of Russian deaths in all conflicts since World War II.
The center's previous report, published in January, had projected that total military losses could reach 1.8 million and might hit 2 million in the spring. At that time, it was estimated that Russia had suffered 1.2 million losses (up to 325,000 dead) and Ukraine had suffered 500,000-600,000 losses (up to 140,000 dead).
Since the beginning of the war, Russia has taken control of about 19 percent of Ukrainian territory, including Crimea. Recently, mutual attacks between the sides have intensified, while international efforts have failed to secure a ceasefire.
